“If you’re not serious about acting, you’re wasting my time and your money”
When I first began teaching acting 21 years ago, I had the attitude that I could teach anyone to act and that I would accept all potential actors that wanted to attend my workshop.
Over the past 21 years however, I began to realize that if I had 20 people in my workshop, on an average, 10 of them would be dedicated to spending their lives pursuing their dream of acting, while the other 10 would have the attitude of “I always wanted to try acting” and busied their days with selling stocks or being data processors or whatever they had chosen as their “life’s work”. The problem being that in pairing people up to do scenes, I would often have one actor who worked their butt off on their scene while the other person was “just too busy” to put the necessary time into the homework and would show up “unprepared”. I found that situation to be highly inequitable.
Wouldn’t it be comforting to know that the actor you are working with is as dedicated as you are?
I have recently decided that it was more fulfilling for me to work with actors that have realized that they have no choice in what they want to dedicate their lives to, and are here in Los Angeles for one reason…to become a successful working actor in television and films. What I refer to as “Dedicated Actors”
Please don’t get the wrong idea that the workshop is like a Casting Call, where the attitude is all about competition. Nothing could be further from the truth. The atmosphere is light yet serious and all of my actors are extremely supportive of each other. It’s a great room to hone your skills.
The level of talent is not important to me. The level of commitment is.
Until I find an appropriate theater, I have moved my workshop to my home in Sherman Oaks, where I have a wonderful theater set up, and I am working with a maximum of 8 actors. My actors and I have found that working out of my home theater set-up is as close to being in the actual audition environment as one can get without actually being there.
I encourage a free audit so that you can “feel” the room to see if it is the right place for you.
If you find my approach appealing and professional, please e-mail me so that we can set up an audit date. I will be glad to supply you with a list of websites and e-mail addresses of current and former students of mine. Thanks.
